What are warts and why do they grow?Warts are parts of your skin that become hardened due to the human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus is contagious and can be spread from person to person; in the case of warts, HPV causes your skin cells to multiply rapidly, forming the wart. There are several types of warts:
- Plantar warts form on the bottom of your feet and can be painful when you walk or stand
- Common warts typically appear on the hands, but can form in other areas of the body, and are usually a gray-brown color
- Flat warts usually affect children and may appear in clusters on the legs or face
How laser therapy for warts worksWart removal laser treatment works by using a powerful beam of light to burn the small blood vessels within the wart, which provides it blood supply that it needs to keep growing. The wart tissue then ultimately dies and falls off within about two to four weeks. To keep you comfortable during your treatment, we use anesthetic so you cannot feel the laser treatment taking place. Most patients describe the sensation of the laser as a rubber band snapping, and pain after treatment is usually minimal.
Am I a good candidate?Laser therapy can be a good option for patients who have large or widespread warts, as well as for patients for whom other therapies (such as freezing or peeling treatments) have failed. It does not typically cause scarring, but there is a risk that it may occur. This is important to consider if you are seeking laser treatment for warts on your face.
