What is a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are a non-invasive way of addressing poor skin texture and tone. Patients with concerns about their facial skin can improve it with just one treatment! Chemical peels are performed in our practice as a way of exfoliating the skin, bringing forward new skin cells for a refreshed appearance. These treatments come in a variety of strengths from mild to aggressive and ensure amazing results each and every time.
What can a chemical peel improve?
There are many skin conditions that patients can improve with the use of chemical peels.
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Pigmentated areas (liver, age, and sun spots)
- Relaxed facial skin
- Congested and large pores
- Overall texture and tone
In most situations, patients request chemical peels for their face, but these treatments can also be used on other areas of the body including the chest, back, and hands. During an evaluation with our dedicated staff, patients can learn how a chemical peel can address skin conditions.
Who is a candidate for a chemical peel and what kind should I choose?
Most patients with healthy skin can benefit from a chemical peel. However, each patient needs to consult with a clinician to determine whether a chemical peel is a good choice for their skin condition.
Milder chemical peels are more superficial and can be used as part of a skin maintenance routine. Patients who have these peels completed may experience slight redness for a day or two, but otherwise can go on with their normal routine without interruption.
Patients who want more dramatic results in a shorter period of time may want to ask about more aggressive peels. These peels may cause redness, peeling, and sensitivity of the skin for a period of approximately one week. Patients will want to schedule social downtime as their skin goes through many changes after a deeper peel. The benefits of an aggressive peel are that results are seen faster and patients can obtain dramatic improvements in just one treatment session.
Do chemical peels hurt?
When done correctly, chemical peels are relatively comfortable for most patients. There may be some slight stinging, but this sensation is evidence that the process is working! We do ask patients about their skin care routine prior to completing a chemical peel to ensure that the ingredients in their skin care products will not interact with the peel being used on the skin. Additionally, some patients with lower pain tolerances may want to start out with a milder peel before progressing to the more aggressive treatments. All of these concerns can be addressed with our staff during a consultation appointment as patients learn about the options they have available to them. We may also make recommendations as to the types of peels to use on the skin based on a patient’s specific needs and desired end results.
